50% off a price nobody ever paid
Updated 2026-08-20

Three thirty-second checks that tell you whether the discount is real or theatre. No economics degree needed.
Listen up, akhi. You see a number in red, you see a line through the old price, and you feel like you caught something. Sometimes you did. Sometimes you got caught.
Thats exactly what this post is for. Three checks, thirty seconds each, and you can tell whether the discount is real or theatre. No economics degree needed.
How a discount that never existed gets made
Its too simple to be rare. Raise the price two weeks before, let it sit there, then drop it back to exactly where it lived all year. Now theres a red line, theres a percentage, and theres a feeling that you saved. Blin.
And it works, not because you are stupid. Nobody carries the price of every product on earth in their head, so you use the one number you were handed: the crossed out one. Once that number is stuck in your head, anything smaller than it looks like profit.
Check 1: the price history, not the number in red
If this price was already here a month ago, its not a discount, its just the price. And you dont need any special tool for this. Something you are thinking about buying, screenshot its price once. A week later that screenshot is worth more than any sign in the window.
Check 2: another store that is not running a sale
The real gap is against the market, not against the sign. Open the exact same model, the same catalogue number, in a second store with no sale on right now. If the "reduced" price comes out the same, you got nothing. And if it comes out higher, you got less than nothing.
Check 3: take the word SALE off, then ask again
Ask yourself whether you would buy it at this price without the word SALE on it and without a clock counting down. If not, the sale did not save you money, it spent it. Its the shortest of the three and its the one that saves the big amounts, because it doesnt check the price. It checks whether you need the thing at all.
The discount is not measured against the red number. Its measured against what people actually paid.
And the real discounts?
Plenty of those exist. Stock stuck in a warehouse, end of season, a model being replaced. There the discount is not a marketing move, its the stores problem that turned into your opportunity. Those are the ones I go looking for. And when something doesnt look worth it to me, Id rather just skip it, not because Im a saint, but because if I hand you junk once, you wont open my next message.
